American Express was incorporated in 1850 originally as a merger of three different companies owned by Henry Wells, William Fargo, and John Butterfield. Today, American Express is one of America's largest card networks. While issuing its own cards, AMEX has issued licenses to banks interested in issuing cards on its' network. American Express got approved to become a commercial bank in order to gain federal funds from the TARP program in 2008.
