BankWest is the trade name for the Bank of Western Australia Ltd. It is active in retail and commercial banking with more than 900,000 customers. The bank has won numerous awards including the 2008 Bank of the Year at the AFR Smart Investor Blue Ribbon Awards, and the Best of the Best award by Gold in Money Magazine for many of its innovative and customer friendly products. The bank currently operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Commonwealth Bank. The Agricultural Bank of Western Australia was originally founded by the Government of Western Australia in 1895 as part of efforts to progress farming activities in the state. The bank enjoyed initial success and is known to have changed its name to the Rural and Industries Bank of Western Australia in 1945. The current name didn't come into play till 1994. A year later, the bank was purchased by the Bank of Scotland and subsequently listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. A majority stake in the bank was purchased by the Commonwealth Bank in December 2008.
