As of today, Commonwealth bank is the second largest Australian bank. The Bank was founded in 1911 by Australian government. It had maintained an active role as Australia’s central bank until this role was transferred to the Reserve Bank of Australia in 1960. Commonwealth Bank joined the Australian Securities Exchange and become a public company in 1991. It operated as a national bank under government influence but was later privatized in 1996. Commonwealth Bank is actually a shorter version for Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The bank operates in various countries outside Australia, and New Zealand with major offices in the United States, United Kingdom, Asia, and South Pacific. Commonwealth Bank is into retail, business, and institutional banking with subsidiary firms into insurance, and investment services. It is known to have introduced Australia's first credit card in 1974.
