HSBC Finance Corporation is a financial services company with local banks operating in more than 15 countries outside North America. The corporation is member of the HSBC group and is the sixth largest issuer of Visa and MasterCard credit cards within the United States. The HSBC Finance Corporation was originally known as Household Finance Corp. founded in 1878 by a Frank J. Mackey. Its name later changed to Household International Inc. in 1981. HSBC group acquired Household International in 2003 and was merged into the groups division carrying out similar operations. HSBC is the second largest consumer finance company in the United States providing real estate and auto loans to mostly sub-prime customers. The company is also into other secondary products. The companies close dealings with sub-prime customers led to it having problems during the 2007 sub-prime mortgage crisis. The corporation affiliates with merchants in issuing many of its credit cards making it the third largest issuer of private label cards in the U.S.
