MasterCard is operated by MasterCard Worldwide, a multinational corporation publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. MasterCard formerly known as "Master Charge: The Interbank Card" from 1966 to 1979 was founded in 1966 by a group of Californian banks. Today, MasterCard is one of the largest card networks in the world with a broad customer base. Prior to its listing on the stock exchange, MasterCard was operated by a membership organization with over 25,000 financial institutions as members. Cards displaying the Master Card logo are accepted at millions of merchants and e-commerce stores around the world. MasterCard offers individuals holding its cards irrespective of credit worthiness additional benefits such as fraud protection. A new contactless payment technology, PayPass, ensures card members don't have to swipe their cards at accepting merchants. This technology is currently being incorporated into cards issued by various financial institutions. These cards come on the MasterCard network.
