St. George Bank was founded in 1937 as a building society. As of incorporation, St. George Bank was then known as St. George Co-Operative Building Society Ltd. After centuries of growth in the area, it achieved its banking status and became a public company in 1992. With new activities under its belt, the bank became one of the most profitable banks in Australia. In December 2008, it became a subsidiary of the WestPac Group that is one of the four largest Australian financial institutions. The bank has a long history of sponsoring community based activities. It is a sponsor of charities, sporting societies, disaster relief programs and business programs. It also sponsors a local rugby team. The bank is strongly affiliated to the Australian Bankers' Association's Disabled Access Working Group and National Relay Service both of which help it improve its branches and services to suit persons with disability.
