Woolworths started out as a basement store located in Sydney. It was known as the Woolworths Stupendous Bargain Basement and opened in late 1924. The initial company had five founders in Percy Christmas, Stanley Chatterton, Cecil Scott Waine, George Creed, and Ernest Williams. With success from the launch of its first store, Woolworths opened a second store in Sydney and this was followed by a rapid development of Woolworth stores in other parts of Australia. The first Woolworth store in New Zealand opened in 1956 with a full fledge supermarket in 1971. Woolworth’s is recognized as the first retail store to employ receipts to customers using a cash register. Woolworth supermarkets are run by the Woolworths Limited Group. The Woolworths group is the largest retail company by market capitalization in Australia and New Zealand. Woolworths is ranked as the 22nd largest retailer in the world. The Woolworths group is known to be the second largest private employer in Australia.
